Byers & O'Sullivan

I came to UNB in 1978 after receiving my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from West Virginia University. My research and teaching interests have been primarily in the area of human sexuality. I find human sexuality to be a particularly exciting field. Despite the fact that sexuality is such an important part of our lives, there has been relatively little research in the area. As a result, there are many, many important questions that remain to be answered.

Over the years I have collaborated with a number of excellent students on a variety of research topics. Our human sexuality research group meets regularly to problem-solve about various research projects as well as to discuss issues related to sexuality research, sex education, and sex therapy. The results of our research typically have important practical implications for the day-to-day lives of individuals, for the work of sex therapists, and for sex education in the schools.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist, and a substantial part of my private practice involves providing sex therapy to individuals and couples who are experiencing sexual difficulties. Among other courses, I teach an undergraduate course in human sexuality as well as a graduate seminar on the assessment and treatment of sexual problems. I have been Chair of the Department of Psychology since July 2003.
